TIGMI RUG SIZE GUIDE

A considered guide to selecting the right rug size for every room, balancing proportion, function and flow.

Choosing the right rug size can be the difference between a room that feels unfinished and one that feels perfectly balanced. At Tigmi, we see rugs not just as floor coverings, but as pieces that bring depth, warmth, and character to a space. The right size and placement will anchor your furniture, define proportions, and create harmony across the layers of a room.

When it comes to performance, hand-knotted rugs are crafted with exceptional skill, offering durability, heirloom quality, and rich texture that improves with age. Handwoven rugs, often flatweave in style, are lighter and more versatile, ideal for layering or casual spaces.

Natural fibers such as wool and jute bring warmth, resilience, and timeless character, while synthetic fibers like recycled PET rugs may be the  best choice for outdoor areas.

Below, we’ve outlined some of the most common rug sizes for each room, along with tips to help you select the best fit. Consider these as guides rather than rules, every home has its own story. And as each Tigmi rug is handwoven, please allow for a gentle variance of around 4% in size, a mark of their handmade nature.

LIVING

300x240cm / 10x8ft

For more compact living areas, our 300x240cm rug creates a cosy, intimate setting. To maintain a sense of openness and flow, position sofas and armchairs slightly off the rug. This subtly enlarges the visual space while still offering that soft, welcoming texture underfoot.

RUNNERS

Runners are the unsung heroes of the home, adding warmth, texture, and softness to transitional spaces. They’re perfect for hallways, kitchens, or alongside a bed, guiding the flow of movement while softening hard surfaces.

When choosing a runner, allow at least 10cm of floor visible on either side to frame the piece. In hallways, the runner should feel like a natural extension of the space; in bedrooms, placing a runner on either side of the bed brings symmetry and comfort underfoot.

Selecting the right rug size is about more than measurement, it’s about how the piece interacts with the architecture and furniture around it, and how it helps your space feel lived-in, balanced, and inviting. With thoughtful consideration, a rug becomes more than a foundation; it becomes the heart of the room.
