Sydney Song Turkish Kilim
This gorgeous vintage hemp Turkish Kilim rug was made in the central Anatolia/Black Sea region in Turkey. The hemp fibres have been overdyed using natural dyes in a various shades of turquoise, purple and blue, and then sewn together in a lovely patchwork style. The rug is finished with cotton backing. A truly beautiful piece!
The process of cultivating hemp fibre is quite time-consuming, labor intensive and avoids the use of chemicals. As soon as the male stalks begin to pollinate, they are separated from the female stalks as it is said that male hemp plants produce silkier fibre than females. The stalks are left to soften in water or sea water for a number of weeks, and then spun into fabric. With all natural fibre, antistatic and antibacterial components, hemp is one of the most durable natural fibres available.
Turkish villagers produced hemp stalk until the 1960's when its production was prohibited. Because of prohibition, hemp fibre and hemp rugs became incredibly rare, and today it can be difficult to find original hemp Kilim rugs.
This rug is organic, handspun, handwoven, and handmade out of natural fibre, and the durability and thermostatic effect hemp creates makes it act as a natural thermostat in both summer and winter.
